Science

Curriculum Statement

Intent
At Canterbury Road Primary School, we teach a high-quality, broad and balanced Science Curriculum that stimulates curiosity. Science provides the foundations for understanding the world and children understand how Science has changed lives and will affect the future.
We follow the Kent Primary Scheme of work which follows the National Curriculum. In accordance with the guidance in the National Curriculum, this scheme has clearly indicated a progression in the key scientific knowledge and concepts, from Year 1 to Year 6.
In the Early Years, we promote and encourage children to explore, investigate and talk about what could or has happened. Through the Early Years Foundation Stage children learn to Understand the World. This area promotes the skills of Science and these early experiences are built upon as children progress through the school.
Our main principles for our learners are:
• Children will be enthused by practical engaging learning.
• Children will be a scientist by working scientifically.
• Children use and understand scientific vocabulary.
• Children ask questions and show resilience in learning.
• Children can apply skills taught in other subjects effectively.

Implementation
Children have weekly Science lessons throughout Key Stage 1 and 2. We aim to teach knowledge of science through, and alongside, working scientifically to ensure that children have a deep understanding of what they know and the impact this will have. We aim for children to have access to learning outside of the classroom during lessons, to themed weeks or days, to visits to local museums, exhibitions and animal enclosures as well as having many more experiences brought into the classroom. We believe that every child should be taught through an engaging creative curriculum to embed their developing knowledge and skills.
We approach Science with a variety of teaching and learning styles in mind. Our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills, and understanding, as well as a sense of enjoyment in Science. Sometimes we do this through whole-class and small group teaching, while at other times we engage the children in an enquiry-based research activity. We encourage the children to ask, as well as answer, scientific questions. They have the opportunity to use a variety of data, such as statistics, graphs, pictures, and photographs. Children use technology in science lessons where it enhances their learning. They take part in role-play and discussions and they present their findings to the rest of the class. They engage in a variety of problem- solving activities. Wherever possible, we involve the pupils in practical activities as these increase enthusiasm and motivation and provide first-hand experience. Practical activities provide the children with a range of contexts allowing safe exploration of the world. We recognise that there are children of different scientific abilities in all classes and we ensure that we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the needs of that child.
In accordance with the guidance in the National Curriculum, the Kent Scheme has clearly indicated a progression in the key scientific knowledge and concepts, from Year 1 to Year 6. Each of the 28 units of study clearly indicates the aspects of knowledge to be developed. Where appropriate, the unit indicates the ‘learning journey’; i.e. where the knowledge and concepts of that particular unit fit within the learning for that particular aspect of science as the child progresses through the primary phase.
Working scientifically skills are built upon and closely link to the previous year. In conjunction with this, key vocabulary is taught through Science in each year group to deepen children’s understanding, enabling them to use and understand key scientific words and revise previous topics to retain prior knowledge.
The units in the Kent Scheme provide activities that will enable the children to test their previously held ideas. In doing so, they will also be encouraged to develop a bank of skills and an understanding of the processes required think scientifically.

Impact
Our successful approach to teaching Science results in pupils enjoying their learning. They are enthused and inspired to learn new things. They demonstrate appreciation and wonder of the world in which they live. Children are confident at using and applying high-level scientific vocabulary. They become independent learners who show resilience and have excellent attitudes to learning. They remember what they learn and can confidently recall key knowledge and skills from current and previous areas of learning and apply these to new situations. Children can work collaboratively and share knowledge with peers.
